United Airlines Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner "100 Years" – N61101
On April 6, 1926, Varney Air Lines—named after the company’s founder, Walter Varney—took off on its first mail flight in Pasco, Washington, bound for Elko, Nevada. A year later, a certain William Boeing established his own airline. Through acquisitions in the following years, the manufacturer took over — or rather, united — several companies, including Varney Air Lines, under one umbrella and renamed his Boeing Air Transport to United Aircraft & Transport Corporation. Finally, in 1931, the company name was shortened to United Air Lines. Since then, the airline has grown into one of the largest in the world: With nearly 1,100 aircraft—not even counting the United Express feeder fleet —United operates the largest fleet of aircraft worldwide.
