Ukraine National Guard Antonov AN-72 – 02 blue
The AN-72, NATO code name “Coaler”, was developed in the late 1970s as a replacement for the widely used Antonov AN-26 turboprop transport aircraft. The positioning of the engines forward of and above the wing gives the aircraft its unique appearance. The aircraft makes use of the so-called Coanda Effect, named for Romanian inventor and aerodynamics pioneer Henri Coandă: engine exhaust gases are blown over the curved surface of the wing, creating more lift, enabling the aircraft to take off (or land) requiring shorter distances. Among the many tasks of the National Guard of Ukraine are protecting state borders, participating in UN peacekeeping missions, countering paramilitary or terrorist organizations, and protecting critical infrastructure such as power plants. Two Antonov AN-72 are operated alongside numerous AN-26 turboprop transports, supporting the supply and deployment of the Ukraine National Guard throughout the country.
