On September 26, 2024, the last two KC-10 Extenders left Travis Air Force Base. Since 1980, the KC-10 had been a crucial asset for U.S. and allied forces, flying airlift and aerial refueling missions across the globe. The KC-10 could carry twice as much fuel as the older KC-135 and at the same time almost as much cargo as the C-17 Globemaster. To commemorate its retirement, Herpa is releasing a small three-model, limited-edition series of the trijet. The first model sports the insignia of the 60th Air Mobility Wing, the final U.S Air Force unit to operate the Extender (item no. 538367). In addition to a KC-10 in the original delivery colors of the Royal Netherlands Air Force (item no. 538374), the very first of 60 KC-10 built for the USAF, serial number 79-0433, is also being released in a limited edition in its original blue-and-white color scheme. She was ultimately retired in 2022 and is today on display at the Air Mobility Command Museum on Dover Air Force Base in Delaware.
