The 302nd Fighter Squadron was formed on October 1, 1974 and equipped with the F-4 Phantom. In 2019 it retired its Phantoms and converted to the new F-35. To celebrate its 50th anniversary, this F-35 was painted in a special scheme. In contrast to most F-35s which are painted with only low-visibility markings, this anniversary scheme has turned out quite colorful with the unit’s eagle emblem in its original blue, white and red form. The stylized white-tail eagle also includes a hidden reference to the squadron’s unit number: the wing has three feathers, the tail has the shape of a zero, and the eagle has two legs.
