The MiniKits range is being expanded with new shape variants. The 996 model series (model year 1998) marked the beginning of a new era in the 911 series, with the air-cooled engine now being water-cooled. The 996 was also beefier (wider and longer) than its predecessor, which steered the look away from the "classic" sports car. The introduction of the Boxster itself, which was more affordable, brought Porsche criticism as it was not a classic 911 and the "danger of confusion" was great.
