The “Spirit of California” was the second operational B-2, and arrived at Whiteman Air Base on August 17, 1994. The 509th Bomb Wing, the sole operator of the stealth bomber, is divided into four branches, including the 509th Maintenance, Mission Support, Medical, and Operations Groups. This last Group is the flying component of the Wing. As the 509th Operations Group lead aircraft, the unit’s abbreviated designation, 509 OG, was added on its landing gear doors, above the 50th Bomb Wing’s mission statement: Anytime, Anywhere.
