Starting in the second half of the 1990s, Volga-Dnepr Airlines, usually known for operating large cargo aircraft, also operated a small fleet of Yakovlev Yak-40 trijets. These were used for a few years providing scheduled domestic passenger services between St. Petersburg or Moscow and destinations along the Volga River, such as Nizhniy Novgorod and Ulyanovsk.
