Since 1982, the NATO Airborne Early Warning and Control Force, based at Geilenkirchen, Germany, has provided air surveillance to NATO Allies, ensuring the integrity and security of NATO Air Space. In the last four decades NATO E-3A AWACS have conducted a wide range of missions supporting counter-terrorism, evacuation and humanitarian aid operations. The E-3A Component holds a unique place in NATO history, because it is the first multinational operational flying unit established by the Alliance, with 20 NATO member nations participating in the program. From the Saab Draken, the massive C-5 Galaxy up to today’s F-35 stealth fighter: Silhouettes of aircraft operated over the decades by NATO member states were applied on the blue stripe running across both sides of the fuselage.
