KLM had already operated Lockheed Constellations since 1946. The in many aspects more capable L-1049G Super Constellation entered the fleet in 1953. They could cover longer distances through the addition of the wing-tip fuel tanks and the weather radar in the slightly longer nose greatly increased reliability in adverse conditions on transatlantic flights. To appear even more modern, the G models received “atomic” names, such as “Proton”, “Electron”, or as in case of this 1/200 scale model of PH-LKC, “Negaton”.
